Bea has a new obsession. It's unlike anything she's enjoyed or been exposed to before. In contrast to the shows she has always enjoyed (Curious George, Daniel Tiger, My Little Pony), it's practically R rated in my book though in reality its rated for age 7. It's a show whose theme is around the most vile of all God's creatures, in my opinion, slugs! SLUGGTERRA! Never heard of it before she randomly came upon it on Netflix, there's very little commercial stuff that goes with it (that's a plus to me), it's not "girly" in the least (another plus), it's dark(ish) and violent (ish)...again it's all relative to Bea's interests up to now. But I watched a couple episodes and it's actually pretty cool. She loves the shows, loves the characters, loves the (gulp) slugs, loves the (double gulp) blaster guns that go along with it, and she and Daddy share a love of the video game that they downloaded of it....I can't even believe my self-named Slug Slinger daughter wants a Trixie blaster or that I'm googling "Halloween slug costumes." Never say never....
We've enjoyed a few visits with Hera, and we are already mourning the fact that she's leaving the area in early June. When Anthony was in DC for a week recently, we three girls went up to Worcester where Hera watched Bea do Aikido, then we shopped and exposed Hera to her first Indian food. It was love at first taste!
This girl meanwhile could live on naan and mango lassi:
School has been going great for Bea. We got a note from her teacher recently saying how very proud of how much her oral reading has improved lately. She's telling time to the hour and half hour, starting to count money, and writing very interesting stories. She works very hard and it's really paying off. I am truly ecstatic when I hear her reading away on her own in the back seat of the car. And I just can't believe that I was writing "Grade 2" on the paperwork of next year's school registration forms. It just seems impossible.
Meanwhile, she and her buddy Samantha remain thick as thieves. These photos, taken this week during some special activities, just made Anthony and me smile wide.
I hear so often the pain in a parent's voice when they tell me that their child doesn't really have a friend. I am so grateful that Bea has Samm. While she's friendly with and could spend any day with any of the kids in her class, this one is a deep, true, love of a friend. The kind you can't get enough time with, the kind who is in your dreams at night, the kind who is in the stories your write, the kind you say you'd take with you if you could only take 3 things to a deserted island for a month, the kind whose name you accidentally call your mother. And the best part? It appears the feeling is mutual:
Beatrice is deeply attached to Anthony and me, but it is effortful some times with others, both to feel or at least express her feelings, and/or to accept their love in return. We are so grateful she's opening up her heart widely to a peer. And a really sweet, nice peer at that.
This weekend is the first of two back-to-back party weekend days. Yesterday was Joseph & Karel's engagement party. The happy couple ties the knot this August!
All the Fulco kids were in town, including almost 18-month old sweetie Annalena. Bea enjoyed some time with her the morning after the party coloring and reading and following her around the house:
And then today was Lucy's 7th birthday party and Bea was the grand champion at Twister! Between her flexibility and balance, this may just be"her thing!"
Last but not least, we said goodbye to Jonah, Anthony's 2001 Celica, and welcomed a brand new Nissan Rogue into the family. Meet Hiro, who I will assume will deliver us safely to thousands of places over the next decade and beyond:
