Peace, but no Peace Day

It rained all day today, so the Peace Day event was cancelled. Anthony was so upset because so much work went into it, but the good news is we were able to attend my Uncle Henry's 50th jubilee at his church. Cousins Truman and Hank were so glad to see her and vice versa!

Girl of Many Faces

A Vietnamese man described Beatrice at 11 months old as "how you say in English?....Princess of Many Dramas." Thank goodness we live close to many community theaters. Anthony shot these today of our little Drama Queen eating lunch....

Q & A

Question: How is self-feeding going?
Answer:

Fun Friday

The scarf play is her favorite and at one point she used it as a cape!
The weather has been gorgeous and leaves are starting to change color
Sweet baby...

Yesterday I took Beatrice to Music & Movement and got to see her in action. She was a hoot. She does what the others are doing maybe 5% of the time, but she's right in there with the action, focusing on the instructor and other kids and every once in a while surprised me with what she can do. She's getting really good at "stomping her feet! She is not shy with other kids and sticks up for herself quite well when necessary. That afternoon we went for a hike with Martha and 2 mo. old Ethan on the River Walk here in town. Beatrice loves "baby Ethan" and when I showed her a book cover with dozens of babies on it recently and asked her "Where's Baby Ethan?" she pointed to one in particular and leaned in and gave him a kiss. It's incredible to see the difference in these two as a toddler and newborn and yet, with him already weighing 13 lbs. I think she'll be looking up to him sooner than later!

Fruit and Flower Anniversary

Only Daddy could console her last night after an overtired bathtime...
Trying on her Peace Day accessories...

On September 24, 2005 at Ferry Beach in Saco, Maine, before a justice of the peace, 2 dear friends, a peaceful bay and a brilliant sunset, Anthony and I exchanged marriage vows. Four years later we are now remarried in the Church, and live in our peaceful home which we share with our faithful dog and miraculous daughter. We are so, so lucky, and I am especially grateful to have found a man whose roles as husband and father are his first priorities. This past month he has embraced being the primary daytime parent, and Beatrice is simply flourishing in his presence. Anthony taught me everything I know about romantic love and, to top it off, we are the very best of friends. I waited a long time to find a husband, and even longer to find a child but, in both cases, I have been blessed beyond belief.

Farewell Summer '09

Third Thursday celebrates diversity, so she wore her new clothes from Mexico (and new yard sale poncho)
Sitting on the bench with "Uncle Kevin" from Anthony's band
Tired in the car after a Trader Joe's run
We set up her new table and chairs from Aunt Denise that she loves!
I just can't resist her morning hair...
Figuring out where the furniture goes in her doll house

I've been back to work for four weeks now and we're settling into a groove. The weather is definitely that of fall. Clothes on the line aren't completely dry by the end of the afternoon, the gardens are darkening and blooming less frequently (although the three red roses out there now are the best of the season), the tomatoes are fewer and farther between, the windows are rarely opened, and we added a quilt on top of our summer comforter two nights ago. This week I put away the exersaucer and packed up most of Beatrice's summer clothes for the attic, and I must admit I was more melancholy than I'd have guessed packing away her first outfits. I brought down lots of fall stuff and rediscovered four Halloween costumes that are all her size that we have to pick from. I remember first looking at those when they were given to us and thinking how she'd really be a toddler by the time she wore them! That she is. Every single day it she is less and less of a baby. Most parents say to enjoy every minute of babyhood because it goes so quickly and, in our case, it moved at warp speed since we missed 2/3 of it. Oh she still has her moments of loving being held and fed and her cries at times still sound like an infant, but mostly I see an inquisitive, fun-loving, independent, and strong-minded person unfolding before my eyes.

I've assigned Beatrice her first chore, which is feeding Sula twice daily. She's so proud to carry the small bowl of food with two hands to the bowl on the floor, and carefully dumps it in, picking up any pieces that fall one by one and placing it where it belongs. After returning the cup to the plastic bin and sliding the lid in place, she sits on the rug in the piano room, just over the line of the kitchen (the same place where Sula stays while WE eat) and watches Sula devour her meal, pointing and laughing hysterically the whole time.

Anthony and Beatrice are having busy and full days while I'm at school. On Fridays they go to the library for a Music and Movement class and, now that she's really walking, she's loving that. The other days, they vary their activity with visits with friends, playing on the swingset, walks, etc. One of her favorite new pasttimes is to stay at the top of the stairs and throw some plastic rattly balls she has down the stairs. Anthony stays at the bottom and throws them back up and she giggles hysterically as she scoots around to gather them in her bedroom or the landing to throw them back down. She loves watching Sula play fetch, so I think she's trying it out herself. She's also really into her pretend doctor's kit, her giant Legos, books, a sorting/stacking game, and she still loves her blocks. They checked out the animals at Petsmart this week, went to an art show at QVCC, and we all went to Third Thursday in Willimantic Thursday evening to hear Anthony's band play. Beatrice continues to be great about trying new foods and eating a wide variety, as evidenced by her Trader Joe's loves of hummus and smoked salmon pate, and her feast at 3rd Thurs. of rice & beans, falafel, and chicken tikka masala. Then, last night, we went to a Ramadan celebration at the Putnam Science Academy and, again, we didn't pack any food and she ate all of the yummy Middle Eastern dishes. She's been trying to repeat more words, and is consistently saying "more," "mama," and "dada." She signs for "help" in a hysterical way, but isn't using many other signs lately. She's also started calling Sula "Doo Dah" this week, and says "hi" still only when she feels like it. This morning she's been fussy and her nose has been runny so for the heck of it I checked her mouth and, lo and behold, she has more teeth! #13 was so close for so long, but it finally came out fully a day or two ago, and today I discovered a brand new huge top molar that's out and another on the other side oh so close. I think that's the one that's hurting right now. If the website I saw was accurate and children get 16 teeth before age 2, she's very close to being done with teething for a while. I'm ready for that!

Today we're off to our friend Danica's third birthday party. Anthony is playing again tonight, but we'll bow out for that one since it only starts after bedtime. Here's a short video of her walking around at Third Thursday. I was chasing her and videotaping at the same time so she realized she had the edge and she didn't really have to listen to me at all!

Noses

This is in response to Nancy's blog challenge where she beautifully described a "little moment" when her daughter and then, one by one, her other children slipped into bed with her the other morning. She asked me to think of and blog about what one of my "little moments" is, so here goes: One of my favorite daily moments, and there are many, is at bedtime when B. and I are in the rocking chair. She sits on my lap, facing me, hands folded between her legs, and leans her chin and face to me to rub noses. We've played this "noses" game for months now. I used to say "let's do noses" and we'd brush our noses back and forth as I said "I" "love" "you" three times and we'd rub them in sync. Now, I either say nothing, as she initiates, or I just say "Noses?" and she gently leans her face right in. When she follows it up with several "more signs," finally laying her head on my chest, somehow indicating she now knows the day is complete, it takes my breath away.

Love this face

I think she got sick of me taking pictures...oh wait, that's her POINTER finger...

Scout Finch goes Mexican

This dress is so pretty on her. Beautiful green.

Yup, the dress was tucked into her diaper. Every girl's nightmare!

What do you call a Vietnamese-Filipino-French-Canadian-American blowing bubbles in Chinese and Mexican clothing? Beatrice on a Sunday! A package came on Saturday from our friends the McLeods, who have retired in Mexico. In it were the most beautiful dolls, headbands, and outfits, so we had a little fashion show today. I can't believe she kept one headband on for over an hour. The "Chinese" dress she wore for most of the day, although it was likely made in China, was a hand-me-down from her cousins, and was bought at H&M. But the Mexican clothes are straight from south of the border. We had a low-key weekend since I wasn't/am not feeling well. Nasty cold that I sure hope Beatrice doesn't catch. We went to hear Anthony play at Rotary Park for about 1/2 hour yesterday and saw about 50 dogs. Beatrice loved , loved, loved all those "dahs!" She went for a checkup last week and she has grown taller and gained a few more ounces , so she ranges in the 25th-35th percentiles for everything. Yesterday, by the way, she really turned a corner and is now officially a walker. Lucky us! She's doing great and is oh so proud of every step she takes. She climbed our stairs on her own twice. It occurred to me that Beatrice approaches most milestones as "slow and steady wins the race." Her style is definitely that she eases into things, taking her time, observing, practicing and, only when she can do something well, does it regularly. Her daily changes are subtle but, before you know it, there they are. She did this with crawling, chewing, and now walking. She has met all the 16-mo. milestones, and she did it at her own pace. The only thing she did quickly and overnight is grow teeth!

Here's a video for her friend Rachel, "blowing" bubbles, saying "hi," and testing the non-toxic label on the bubble container

We bought this top for her when we sure we were being matched with a boy. Anthony insisted we keep it for her, and it is mighty cute (and incredibly soft!)

Sunday we went for a long walk after church

We stopped off at Victoria's Station
